Petroleum-based plastics are used indiscriminately around the world due to their low cost, high durability, and convenience for manufacturing. They pose several healthy and environmental hazards because they are not easy to recycle and dispose of, build up in landfills, and are treated by incineration. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in recent years, the use of hygiene products such as face masks and disposable food containers has increased, causing a significant increase in environmental pollution. Therefore, recyclable, and biodegradable materials have attracted more and more attention. Biodegradable plastics and recycled materials are proposed as an alternative to commercial plastics.
Biodegradable materials (photodegradation, water degradation, biodegradation), natural resources, and waste recycling are all good methods to solve the pollution problem of petroleum-based materials, agricultural wastes and industrial wastes, and domestic garbage in the world. Biomass is also a potential renewable feedstock for biopolymers. New materials can be produced or reused through synthesis, extraction, processing, or treatment. There are quite a lot of relevant research in recent years, but very few can really be transformed into products. This Research Topic aims to explore more feasible biodegradable materials, biomass materials, recycled materials, or waste recycling as the target of potential market applications. It is expected to make some contributions to global carbon neutralization and carbon peaking.
