Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural hazards that cause loss of life and property. The destruction potential of earthquakes depends on different factors such as maximum acceleration of the ground motion, focal depth, epicenter distance, and local site conditions. But the causes of fatalities and the scale of damages depend on lack of engineering service, design faults, material quality, and workmanship. It is important to understand the seismic behaviour of structures to reduce seismic damage and to provide seismic safety for the structures. This Research Topic “Seismic Assessment of Structures” aims to present relevant research articles and case studies focused on the recent signs of progress in the subject of seismic assessment of concrete, steel and masonry structures. Heritage buildings are also included. Experimental, analytical, and numerical studies are taken into consideration for the topic.


Contributions involving recent developments and innovative applications of dynamic principles, earthquake engineering, and digital technologies in the design and/or analysis of structural engineering will be preferred.


The scope of the topic includes but is not limited to:

- Construction failures of structures (masonry, steel, reinforced concrete) in recent earthquakes

- Seismic assessment of structures

- Linear and non-linear earthquake response of structures

- Soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on the seismic behaviour of structures

- Seismic behavior, modeling, and dynamic analysis of non-structural elements

- Ground motions for analysis and design

- Seismic risk reduction
